SUNRISE ASSISTED LIVING CENTER: This neighborhood senior assisted living center is looking for volunteers, young and old, to visit residents: play cards or board games, organize an activity or just enjoy conversation. Families are welcome to come and help out as well. Please contact Cindy Senn, the Sunrise Activity and Volunteer Coordinator at (313) 343-0600.

 

SERVICES FOR OLDER CITIZENS (SOC): The SOC hosts many regular programs and special events throughout the year for the elderly living in our local communities. Most programs and events present numerous opportunities for volunteers with different skills and interests to give back to their community.

MEALS ON WHEELS
Meals on WheelsVolunteers from all walks of life come together to give back to our community by delivering Meals on Wheels to our homebound seniors. These caring volunteers deliver not just a hot meal, but a much appreciated smile and friendly visit. It seems like such a simple task, but to our shut-in seniors, it is so much more. For many, it's the human touch that affects them the most. In one recent year alone, almost 21,000 meals were delivered. Volunteers are needed each weekday between 10:30 a.m. and noon. Friday, October 22, 2010 –Two volunteers are needed to assist at our flu clinic.
Monday, October 25, 2010– Please drop off any healthy snacks for the seniors “Halloween Tea, which will be held on the following day (such as vegetable trays, crackers and cheese tray etc.)
Tuesday October 26, 2010Halloween Tea. Volunteers needed to set up, help with check-in, help with serving and clean-up. Please see the attached flyer for additional service opportunities and information about this wonderful local organization.

 

FOCUS HOPE: Enlists the support of volunteers for a variety of meaningful projects. Students are needed

to pack and deliver boxes of food to low-income senior citizens who have no transportation or are otherwise unable to pick-up food from the food centers. Volunteer opportunities have flexible times. Groups may also adopt a senior citizen to deliver food to each month. Please call the Focus Hope Food Program at (313) 494-4440 for additional information or to sign-up.

 

FAMILY ACTIVITY-THE GREENING OF DETROIT PROJECT:  Calling all families with Green Thumbs! This Detroit neighborhood group needs help planting trees to assist in the reforestation of Detroit.  Groups will be assigned a designated section of Jefferson Avenue to plant trees on Saturday, October 23rd. Students and families must arrive at St. Paul no later than 8:15 a.m. We expect to return no later 1:00 p.m. Parents are encouraged to participate as well. Parents and mentor leaders may also contact the organization to work on an alternate weekend. Tree planting events are currently being hosted every weekend during the spring and fall months. We will be working with the Greening of Detroit to help bring some much needed trees to the city.

If you are coming as a family you do not need a permission slip.

 

If you are coming with your mentor group please bring a permission slip with you. We will be meeting for bagels at the school in-drive and then heading out to meet up location in Detroit for our morning of service.

 

Students and families must arrive at St. Paul no later than 8:15 a.m.

We expect to return no later 1:00 p.m.

ST. JOHN PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY CARNIVAL: Wednesday, November 10th (4:00-8:00 p.m.)

Two volunteer shifts are available. This event takes place in the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Main Ballroom. This is a very special evening for the children and their families. They get a fun-filled evening away from the hospital and cancer treatments.  Assistance is needed with set-up, helping children with games and clean-up. WINDEMERE PARK ASSISTED LIVING CENTER: This community would love to have students come and visit, play games or participate in other activities with their residents. The facility is located in Warren.

VAN ELSLANDER CANCER CENTER: Students and parents are needed to decorate the Oncology Center for the Christmas season, so it was bright and cheerful for patients. The decorating date is not on the calendar yet, but will most likely be scheduled after Thanksgiving. Additional projects may also be available at this facility. MICHIGAN MILITARY MOMS (MMM): This organization will collect items for our military men and women stationed overseas. Volunteers are needed to collect, purchase, and wrap care packages for the troops. Students may volunteer in a variety of different ways, including making letters or cards. ST. MARY’S NURSING HOME:  This community truly enjoys when the students come for a visit. Organized groups are needed to visit residents: play cards or board games, organize an activity or just enjoy conversation. Several groups in the past hosted a tea social for the residents. They served tea and cookies, and visited with the elderly. This facility is located on 9 Mile Road in St. Clair Shores.

SHOREPOINTE VILLAGE: Volunteers are needed to visit and socialize with the elderly residents. Activities may include an organized activity, playing cards; participate in BINGO or making crafts. There is also a need for Eucharistic ministry. Please contact Celest Vacante (586) 498-4500 to volunteer.

 

SPRING PLANTING DAY to be held in May, 2011 between 4:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.  

Please bring ˝ flat of flowers (Impatiens are a great choice) to plant at St. Joseph Nursing Home,

which is located on Cadieux Road in Detroit. This always brightens their summer days!

PRISON FELLOWSHIP ANGEL TREE PROGRAM: This project delivers gifts of love and hope to needy children of prisoners at Christmas time. If you are not familiar with Angel Tree it is a program of Prison Fellowship, a ministry that focuses on transformation of those incarcerated and is rooted in the belief that no life is beyond the reach of God’s power. With your help, our goal is to reach the hearts of the children of prisoners with gifts of love and a message of hope at Christmas time; and to ultimately break the cycle that these kids are in such great jeopardy of repeating. If you would like to learn more about Prison Fellowships’ - Angel Tree, you can check it out at www.angeltree.org. Volunteers are needed to help shop, collect, organize, wrap and deliver gift items to children on the wish list. This organization is looking for groups to deliver gifts to the homes of children in the Detroit area on Saturday, December 18th (7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.) Please contact Lisa Thams at (313) 882-5118 if you have additional questions or would like to sign-up.

 

 

The ARC: GPHW chapter is a national organization of and for people with developmental disabilities. 

They work to enhance the quality of their lives by providing necessary supports/services. Help is needed

at 3 special dinner dances held for these individuals. Mingle with children and adults with developmental and cognitive impairments: simply dance, talk, play games, and have fun with everyone present.  Two dances are scheduled during the year. Both events take place at the Assumption Cultural Center.

PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY (PBJ) OUTREACH PROJECT:  PBJ (Peanut Butter and Jelly) Outreach Inc. is an ecumenical group of people volunteering their time and services to provide food, clothing, and basic social services to homeless people as well as those who are below the poverty level, living in the depressed and impoverished areas of the Metropolitan Detroit area, including the Cass Corridor section of inner city Detroit. The services are provided to all, regardless of race, religion (or lack thereof), gender or national origin.  This is a family-friendly program, and all are welcome without special training needed. We are "Kids Friendly" (+7). Individuals and families are invited to come any Saturday (52 weeks a year). Individuals or families, please meet us any Saturday morning in the kitchen of the basement of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, located at 47650 N Territorial Rd, Plymouth, MI (Map) at 6:00a.m. Just show up. You can also meet us at the corner of Martin Luther King and 3rd Ave, Detroit, MI (Map) at 8:10 a.m. by prior arrangements. For additional program information, please visit www.pbjoutreach.org.

 

EARTH WORKS GARDEN: This community project was developed and run by the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. This organization provides vegetables to the poor throughout the Detroit area. It is located in Detroit at Mt. Elliot, near the Meldrum Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Students should plan to wear tennis shoes (no flip-flops are allowed), pants, and bring a long sleeve shirt to work in.  Gardeners should expect to get dirty! No One Dies Alone (NODA): This St. John Hospital project was created to comfort patients with no visiting family members. Volunteers are needed to make silver bead bracelets (materials provided) that will be sold to benefit terminally ill patients. All proceeds from the sale of the bracelets will be used to purchase a variety of care and comfort items; music, CD’s, DVD’s, lotion, books, and activity items, etc.)

The CAPuCHIN Meldrum SOUP Kitchen (provides breakfast and lunch, m-f) and the CAPuCHIN Conner SOUP Kitchen (provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner, m-s):  Serve the poor who suffer from the lack of basic human needs. Both kitchens are run by the Capuchins, providing daily meals to the poor and homeless; and both need help!  They need assistance in preparing and serving the meals.  This is great service opportunity for Mentor groups!  Give them a call to see how and where you can help.  The contact person is Roy Hoelscher at (313) 822-8606, ext. 10. 

 

CROSSROADS:   An Ecumenical Social Service Ministry that provides emergency food, clothing, and hygiene kits to those in need. Hygiene items are needed and hands to package them together in kits. Help is needed on most Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at their location:  Crossroads, 92 East Forest Ave., in Detroit.  Please contact Nicol Harris or Janice Vandeputte for additional information at

ST. ALOYSIUS COMMUNITY CENTER

Description:  An inner-city ministry to the homeless offering food, shelter, and clothing.  Serving over 1000 PBJ sandwiches each day, providing 600 bags of groceries each month to seniors, and giving clothing to those in need requires the prayer and help of many!  Location:  1209 Washington Blvd., between State St. and Grand River.  Directions: Take Jefferson downtown to Washington Blvd. (it begins in front of Cobo)

 

GLEANERS FOOD BANK

To reserve a spot for your student, family or mentor group,  please contact Tricia Kesteloot at

Description:  Upon arrival at Gleaners, sign in.  The day begins with either a tour of the food bank or a video describing their mission and operation.  The group will work for 1˝ hours, have a short break and snack, have their picture taken, work for 1 more hour and depart. Please identify yourself as a St. Paul on the Lake parishioner when you call for an assignment (Thursday –Saturday).

THANKSGIVING BASKETS:  Parents and children needed to help transport baskets of food to Nativity during the weekend of November 13/14, 2010 after the 12:00 Mass.*

 

CHRISTMAS GIFTS:  We need a parent or two and their children to help transport gifts to Nativity during the weekend of

December 11/12, 2010 after the 12:00 Mass.*

 

EASTER BASKETS: Another opportunity for families to help bring baskets to Nativity during the weekend of April 9/10, 2011 after the 12:00 Mass.*

NATIVITY OF OUR LORD PARISH

 

 

 

GROSSE POINTE/ST. CLAIR SHORES (CROP) WALK: This annual event will take place on Sunday, May 1, 2011.
